I just died

Art Buchwald died 10 days ago.  I never was a big fan of his columns.

His auto-video eulogy was pretty interesting.

Mourning Marriage

The gay marriage debate is kind of a dead issue now in Canada, but not to Bill.

For some reason the weirdness of Canada&#xu2;019s enthusiastic embrace of gay marriage has stuck in my craw, and so I got warmed up by trying to write something brief about it. But the topic is so galling I failed miserably at keeping it short, and have ended up with about eight pages. I can only respond to the advice that blogs should be short by saying readers can make them as short as they wish by reading longer ones such as this in pieces, a bit each day, if desired.

To Serve and be PC (politically correct)

I don’t know about you, but stuff like this disturbs me...and it should bother you too.

Recruiting Drive For Members Of The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning Community

Clearly, changing the name from police force to service had a detrimental effect on a once proud unit.  Now, it’s simply a reflection of the political whim of the day.

It’s no wonder

...that the Iraqis are doing whatever it takes to repel the Americans, with this policy.

A story in today’s WaPo reports that temporary “enjoyment marriages” are back in vogue amongs Shiites in Iraq. These marriages essentially allow men to take women as temporary consorts.

Europe, Thy Name Is Cowardice

Got this email the other day; glad to see that it’s true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements.

Mercer in Afghanistan

I’ve always liked these two Ricks.

A few months ago General Rick Hillier promised me a Christmas I would never forget; turns out he is a man of his word.

Good job, both of you guys!

Artless musings

Fred doesn’t think much of establishment art—and either do I.

Now Bateman is an artist.

Thirteen, the movie

If you are a parent, and if you have a daughter, the movie Thirteen is a must see.

“Beautifully disturbing” is the best review byline I’ve seen.  Buy or rent it today!

Read some reviews to see what I mean.

Strangling Detroit

An interesting post on the differences between US and Japanese car operations in North America.

GM pays $31.35 an hour. Toyota pays $27 an hour. Not such a big difference. But--thanks in part to union work rules that prevent the thousands of little changes that boost productivity--it takes GM, on average, 34.3 hours to build a car, while it takes Toyota only 27.9 hours.

Of boys and innovation

Fred is worried that not having the best man for the job could mean little or no innovation.

Darwin Awards

These are always good for a laugh.

Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the Darwin Awards salute the improvement of the human genome by honoring those who accidentally remove themselves from it, thus ensuring that the next generation is one idiot smarter. Of necessity, the Awards are generally bestowed posthumously.

Hidden faces/Hidden truths

Why do all these stories have poor women with children - with nary a mention of a father?  Where did these children come from?  Were all of them from artificial insemination?

Each of these millions of hidden faces has a different story to tell. But the simple truth is that none of these people has enough money to eat every day or live in a decent home.

I’m tired of the most important reason for poverty being overlooked: divorced families, with either locked-out or deadbeat dads.  A single family unit, with the father paying his share, would go a long way to eliminate “poverty”.
