War for the wireless world

One thing for sure: the wireless carriers are going to hang on, kicking and screaming.

Canadians anxiously awaiting the arrival of Apple Inc.’ s iPhone are in for a bit of a shock: they may need to move to Rwanda to afford it.

War on Drugs Raging

Wow, I’m all for stiff sentences, but here’s a wake up call for anyone carrying more than an aspirin into the US.

The minimum sentence for that quantity of drugs in Illinois is 30 years. The maximum is 120 years.

I don’t think anyone in a Canadian jail has served a sentence like that in 100 years.

Why I like Fantino

How can you not like the guy?

Would you still try to weasel your way out of a speeding ticket if it was the OPP commissioner standing outside your car?

Had enough Potter yet?

Nothing tops the hysteria that is Harry Potter, but enough is probably enough now.

How to survive the civil service

A fascinating read.

As a 57-year-old public servant, I feel that I owe it to the next generation to educate them in the ways of the federal government. In order to make the transition as painless as possible, I want to pass on my accumulated wisdom in the hope that new public servants can avoid many of the bureaucratic pitfalls.

GPS can be dangerous

I finally bought one, and have to admit that articles like this make me nervous about following it to closely.

In another example of the evils of computer navigation, a 37-year-old trucker followed his GPS directions to their totally illogical conclusion when he drove his truck down a pedestrian walkway and wedged the delivery vehicle into a cherry tree.

My GPS has taken me down many crescents unnecessarily...I have to admit, I prefer using my map book.  The only real advantage to the gps unit is night driving, when it’s hard to see street signs.

Tammy Faye Messner dies

I’m not sure why this is so upsetting to me...but it is.

Tammy Faye Messner, the former televangelist and Christian singer who battled drug addiction and later inoperable cancer, died Friday morning, CNN’s Larry King said Saturday night. He said the family had asked him to make the delayed announcement.

Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker in 1987, the year of the PTL scandal that sent him to prison.

She was 65.

CNN has great coverage of the death, of course.

If you haven’t seen the video interview this past Thursday, then watch it on the site.  It’s like watching a dead woman talking.  If you haven’t seen Tammy like I haven’t in a while, you’re in for quite the shock.

last really fat cow for the telcos to milk.

Streetcars must die!

There’s nothing in this article that convinces me that a streetcar is more efficient or cost effective than a bus.

A few letters tell the rest of the tale.

Public Stoning Tomorrow

It’s important to know your enemy in the war on terror.

The Regime in Iran stoned Jafar Kiani to death last week.
Now, the pit has been prepared for the stoning of Mokarrameh Ebrahimi, his lover.
She is the mother of two children.

The Dilbert Blog: Hypnosis

One of my favorite bloggers on hypnosis.

When I was a kid, my family doctor was a hypnotist. He hypnotized my mom before she gave birth to my little sister. Mom reports that she felt no discomfort during the birth, despite being awake and having no drugs. That story had a big impact on me.

Bolts From The Blue

Is this where the expression out of the blue comes from?

The photos below are classic examples of ‘Bolts from the Blue”. A “Bolt from the Blue” is a cloud to ground lightning flash which typically comes out of the back side of the thunderstorm cloud, travels a relatively large distance in clear air away from the storm cloud,

Get them out

When is the government going to get out of the electricity production business?  They obviously can’t get it right.

Hot days ahead and a desire to keep cool could spell trouble for the province’s electricity system.

Global warming exposed

An essential read by one of Canada’s most lucid conservative commentators.

What follows is a 9-page critique of the so-called “global warming” scare that has taken the world by storm. It took a lot of time and effort to pull this together. I hope readers will agree it is sufficiently comprehensive to put this whole topic in a reasonable perspective.

How many more?

If this doesn’t make you wonder what on earth our young men with young families are doing over there, I don’t know what will.

Matthew Dawe, 27, reaches for his son, Lucas, 1, at CFB Edmonton in February. Dawe, five other soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were killed yesterday.

If we’re going to send our country’s future over to help rebuild a nearly irreparable country, can’t we at least give them some decent equipment?  Since most seem to be blown up in roadside bombs, why are they not traveling around in something bomb proof, say, perhaps a tank?

If we don’t have the equipment to travel around safely, then perhaps we should find another way to keep the peace over there.  The human cost is just not worth it.

Happy Dominion Day!

Not all of us like the new Canada Day moniker.

Mark recounts how it’s Year 0 in our “young” nation.
