Canada slips behind

More bad news for those of us who wonder where Canada will end up in the digital world down the road.

The speed at which the Internet has already transformed the world is truly amazing. The World Wide Web, which made the Internet a mass participation network, wasn’t even developed until the early 1990s and only began to take off in the mid-1990s.

Let’s not even talk about how far behind we are in the mobile data pricing/speed world.

ebay falling behind

Is it just me, or is the ebay interface old and clunky, and unintuitive?

Like all other businesses, ebay needs to be improving their interface.  Clearly, they haven’t, and it’s a pain to use.  Plus, there doesn’t appear to be a site for mobile phones to access ebay.

Get with the program boys!

Wifi not delivering

Now that I have my Tytn, I can sniff out wireless hotspots all over Toronto.  Believe me,
like Dvorak, I find that they are few and far between, and hardly worth the effort to connect to.

With all these wireless fiascos marching lockstep into the toilet, you can imagine my surprise when I heard about the laughable White Space Consortium.

Do you Facebook?

I recently signed up, mainly to see what the buzz is all about.  It’s an interesting site, but so far, I’m not sure what the use of it is.  Jeff Jarvis likes it too.

I have spent this weekend in awe of and devoting too many hours to Facebook.

Gmail is the best!

I am currently forwarding all my email to gmail - and it is catching all the spam that spamassassin was letting through.  So I have now gone from 30 spams a day getting through 0.

Chalk up another victory to the big G.

I believe it

Guess I’m not the only one who thought my spam filter fell asleep in the last couple of months.

Hearing from a lot of new friends lately? You know, the ones that write “It’s me, Esmeralda,” and tip you off to an obscure stock that is “poised to explode” or a great deal on prescription drugs.

AVG no longer free?

The anti-virus program I am using seems to be going pay.

STAY PROTECTED: Your AVG Anti-Virus Free 7.1 will be discontinued on 15. January 2007!

Well, it was fun while it lasted.  Never did catch any viruses that I know.

Time to try something else, like Clamwin.

Hiptop2 from Fido

Look what I bought the other day.

This thing is a great little unit - the best part of the deal is the $20/month unlimited data, that Rogers and the others really can’t touch.

If any of you are interested in the product, email , and I will refer you so we can both get a $20 credit.

Glad I didn’t listen

I’m so glad I took a pass on working on computers for a living. Sometimes it pays not to listen to your parents.

The IT Professionals Association of America, (ITPAA, inc http://www.itpaa.org) does not see any end to the decline of students pursuing degrees in Computer Science any time soon. Scott Kirwin, founder of the

Firefox 1 out

Now is the time to put the boots to IE and Microsoft.

A NEW front has been opened in the long-dormant browser war, with the first full version on the open source Firefox browser aiming to challenge Microsoft’s dominant Internet Explorer.

Radio kick start

I don’t know if the future is satellite radio - but this will sure help.

Potty talk could be just what the fledgling satellite radio industry needs to become a viable, mainstream business, industry analysts said Wednesday in the wake of shock jock Howard Stern’s defection to satellite network Sirius.

Internet based radio will probably be what takes over, but we’ll see.

It’s off already!

Ok, ok, my desktop is now off when I’m not using it.

Wired reports that there’s no longer a reason to keep your computer always on:

“IT folks used to advise leaving computers on all the time to avoid wear and tear. But components are much more reliable now, and new research shows there’s no reason not to go green and turn PCs off when not in use

Stanglehold loosens

I’ll be happy when IE’s grip on the desktop falls below 50%.  This is a good sign/start.

A series of highly publicized security vulnerabilities found in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web browser may be having an effect on the browser’s market share, according to data compiled by WebSideStory, a San Diego Web metrics company. Over the last month, Internet Explorer’s share of the browser market dropped by 1 percent, the first noticeable decline since WebSideStory began tracking the browser market in late 1999.

Bloglines just got better

If you don’t use bloglines, then you just aren’t current.

Recently named one of Time Magazine’s “50 Coolest Web Sites”, Bloglines searches and indexes more than 80 million web articles and, with five million hits a day, commands the market lead as the most comprehensive, integrated and full-featured service for searching, subscribing, publishing and sharing Internet content from news feeds and blogs.

Another reason to dump IE and get Firefox .9

Security experts warn that a new Internet virus—spreading through hundreds and perhaps thousands of websites infected—may steal credit card and other valuable information from people’s home computers.
