Live well today
One of life’s cruel ironies: the Dr. that doesn’t eat breads and fruits is near death.
Diet guru Dr. Robert C. Atkins was in a coma and on life support Friday after falling on an icy sidewalk and hitting his head earlier this week.
All the people that overexercise, overdiet, over anything - makes you wonder if it’s all worth it when you read stories like this.

SARs scam
Those of us in Toronto have been inundated with news of SARS - a disease you would think his the new plague. The hysteria is incredible, getting more coverage than the War.
I heard Leonard Horowitz on the radio today, promoting his website SARS scam.
Having been well-trained in media health promotion and persuasion methods from my behavioral science studies at Harvard University, I concluded that something akin to a social experiment was underway. With SARS, people were being frightened beyond reason, I realized. The classic definition of phobia was being manifested on a social, if not global, scale.
I am not big on conspiracies, but this website does make a lot of sense. 36,000 Americans die a year of the flu - something that hasn’t been reported on in years.
The internet is very powerful, and even if this guy is a quack, you can decide for yourself. I always believe that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Ban these dogs?
Does anyone else agree that these are not family pets? How many, especially kids, have to be killed or maimed badly before we ban them?
Or, should we just charge the owners with manslaughter? Personally, I think we should hit the irresponsible owner with heavy charges so the responsible dog owners can keep their dogs. However, we know our society always tends to legislate everyone to get to the few.
A 4-year-old boy was mauled to death while alone in his back yard with at least three Rottweilers late Saturday.
The body of James Waddell was found outside his rural home by his father.

Clinton Legacy?
Let’s hope the ocean keeps this program from infiltrating our school system.
A GOVERNMENT-backed course is encouraging pupils under 16 to experiment with oral sex, as part of a drive to cut rates of teenage pregnancy.
Family campaigners believe that the course, called A Pause, is having the reverse effect by exciting the sexual interest of children.
Sadly, it’s probably just a matter of time.

War on words
Taking George Orwell’s 1984 to new limits of absurdity, Groupthink that is a schoolboard has banned the word “gun” from the little minds’ lexicon.
The word gun was banned from spelling tests in one school only and not across the Upper Canada District School Board, board officials said Tuesday.
Uh, don’t forget the word “war”, guys. You’ll be hearing a lot of that too in the days ahead.
Makes me sick!
Sex sells
Wrote a letter today to Nestle complaining about their latest campaign to sell coffee to toddlers. Feel free to cut and paste the letter below and email Nestle yourself.
re: Your Nescafe commercials.
I watch cartoons on Teletoon with my 4 year old daughter from 8pm to 830pm.
Your latest commercial with the guy and girl ogling each other over his Nescafe moustache is extremely offensive.
Clearly, the girl is acting like a porn star with her tongue rimming her lips. Clearly, this ad is using sexual symbolism to sell coffee. Clearly, this is inappropriate viewing for a 4 year old, the target audience for Bugs Bunny.
Please pull the ad or move it to another time slot where young eyes won’t be affected.

New Nambla President
They suspected Pete Townsend of being a pedophile, and arrested him. We know Michael Jackson is one, based on his latest interview - so when will he be arrested and his children removed?
Despite persistent questioning from Bashir, Jackson defended his desire to sleep close to young boys, describing the practice as “very charming” and “very sweet.” In fact, he recommended that the interviewer do likewise, sleeping in the same bed as friends of his own children.
According to Jackson, not only do children like to be touched, but the superstar told Bashir he would kill himself if he could not be close to young boys.

OJ again
Could OJ’s daughter be next?
Miami-Dade police arrived at O.J. Simpson’s Florida home earlier this month after his teenage daughter placed an emotional 911 call following an argument with her father, authorities said.
One of the greatest miscarriages of justice of all American time.

Western self loathing
The brilliant Mark Steyn on abortion’s 30 year RvsW case...and how it relates to the decline of the West…
Abortion is like the entirely mythical “population bomb” touted by the award-festooned Paul Ehrlich, who predicted millions of Americans would be starving to death by the 1980s: It’s a prop of the Western progressive’s bizarre death-cultism. We are so bad, so racist, so polluting, so exploitative that we owe it to the world not to be born in the first place.

Missing woman
‘Other woman’ comes forward / Laci Peterson’s family speaks out on her husband
Is there anybody left in America that believes that the husband didn’t have something to do with his wife’s disappearance? First, he lies about having an affair, right up until the other woman comes forward. Now, he wants to concentrate the search miles away from the incident? Can someone say OJ here?
Any time a woman goes missing or dead, the man in her life is the #1 suspect, period. Simple stats.
The sooner the cops turn their magnifying glasses on Scott, the sooner they’ll find the truth.
One month after a pregnant Modesto woman vanished, a tearful 28-year- old woman stepped forward Friday night to admit that she had carried on an affair with the missing woman’s husband.

Parental Common Sense
I like reading common sense: Discovery has a story on how kids in two parent families are - surprise - more stable!
Children of single-parent families are more than twice as likely to suffer depression, kill themselves, drink to excess or get hooked on drugs than counterparts from two-parent households, a major study says.
You have em, you raise em! Especially you fathers!

McFatheads
Suit dismissed that blamed McDonald’s obesity, other health woes
What a concept....individuals are responsible for themselves. I don’t know who’s more irresponsible or reprehensible here: the lawyers or their clients in this case.
Saying the law is not intended to protect people from their own excesses, a federal judge threw out a class-action lawsuit Wednesday that blamed McDonald’s food for obesity, diabetes and other health problems in children.

Gateway Drug
More bad news for the Cdn government and their plans to decriminalize the weed. An Aussie study supports the case that marijuana leads to harder drugs.
People who start using cannabis by their mid teens are more than twice as likely as others to experiment with different drugs and to become dependent on drugs or alcohol, a major Australian study has found.
The research, which fuels growing concern about cannabis-related harm, is the latest to consider the contentious question of whether cannabis is a “gateway” to hard drug use.

Soft Porn Commercials
It has come to the point where I can’t let my children watch television commercials anymore. Commercials, for Chrissake! Whatever happened to the days when they were aimed at the general public in hopes of selling their product? Now it seems that they’re only aimed at extremely horny people.
For example, there is a new Slim Fast commercial out. Yes, Slim Fast. The diet supplement. The commercial opens with a nude couple in bed, apparently making love and the voice over is the woman wondering if this, in conjunction with her daily intake of Slim Fast, will burn enough calories. ???????
Not to mention the new commercial for Club House seasonings which is a take off of the pottery scene in “Ghost”. A woman is making pasta for dinner and is adding the Club House seasoning. Her husband comes up behind her, practically glues himself to her, grabs her hands to help her “add in the spice” and starts to make moaning noises. Over pasta!!!
Looks like Danone yogurt took a page from Club House’s commercial. It’s a pity that they think they need sex to sell yogurt. My 4 year old daughter loves yogurt, but there’s no way I can let her see these commercials!
I won’t even bother detailing all the shampoo and gum commercials as I’m sure you get the general idea (although that gum commercial - is it for Dentyne? - where the girl and guy have to jump into the pool to “get wet” before making out is a bit far fetched, not to mention the one for - is it a microwaveable dinner? - where the couple gets into the food a la “9 1/2 Weeks"). I thought that commercials were geared to sell to everyone (obviously not diet aids, but certainly gum!). Apparently I was wrong. It’s a sad thing when I have to have the remote control in my hand, ready to quickly turn the channel should one of these commercials come on. It will be even sadder when those parental control options that can block out certain channels that youngsters shouldn’t be seeing will soon apply to commercials! What is this world coming to?

Miscarriage of justice
A good article on the miscarriage of democracy, with reference to the commutation of 167 death row inmates’ sentences.
And those cheering, finally, must have been aware—uneasily, one trusts—that Ryan abused his power of commutation not to save innocent men but to repeal a law passed by the Illinois legislature and supported by the voters of Illinois that he and his political allies are unable to repeal by democratic debate and electoral struggle. We might call that a miscarriage of democracy.

Hyprocrite oath?
Do politicians take a hyprocrite oath when they get into power? This is the same guy that pressured other MLAs to resign when facing criminal charges. Sadly, Campbell won’t resign.
An emotional Campbell, who does not plan to contest the charge, repeatedly called his actions last Friday “a terrible personal mistake” but said he had no plans to resign.
The charge he will plead no contest to is a criminal offence in BC. So, what, now we will have a criminal running a province?
His excuse that he was on personal vacation and not on business time is pathetic. His crocodile tears maybe heartfelt, but for him not to take a true leadership role and quit is sad.
Bill Clinton and Campbell are two sad examples of no consquences for bad, illicit or illegal behaviour.

Spotted: Real World Judge
Wow everybody - a judge that makes sense - and let’s the public know that he agrees with common sense ideals. Someone promote this judge.
An Alberta judge was under attack yesterday for launching into a moral lecture in court about the social ills of divorce in which he said feuding parents should stay together for the sake of their children no matter how miserable their marriage.

DP by the numbers
Capitalism Magazine: Death Penalty by the Numbers by Jeff Jacoby is a great article on some of the real numbers about the DP.
It is striking that a controversy so large revolves around numbers so small. The death penalty is available in 38 states and the federal system, yet only 66 convicted killers were executed in the United States last year. That was fewer than the 85 executed in 2000, which in turn was fewer than the 98 executed in 1999.

Free love
Why is it that it’s always dirty old middle aged white guys that start these free love (ie. free sex) cults? Why is it that they always seem to get so many sexy 20 somethings joining up and buying their crap? Ah well, now that they’re fooling around with human life, Michael Coren has something to say about it.
Third, they believe in free love. Gosh, it’s extraordinary how often the sexual frustration bit makes an appearance. Of course, the term free love is a colossal misnomer. Love is never free. It requires a price, ... they actually mean cheap sex. That is, the exchange of bodily fluids with people you hardly know, on a regular and random basis. Instant, if passing, pleasure. The worship of the orgasm. Not new, really, in that such cults have long existed.
The result of having sex at the drop of a condom is AIDS and HIV, venereal diseases, depression, suicide, unloved babies, smashed families.

Marriage means something
It’s nice to see that the Supreme Court of Canada agrees with me that marriage actually means something, and as such, the courts will treat a married couple’s assets in a divorce/breakup differently than those of a common law couple.
Thousands of common-law couples living in Canada will be affected by a new court ruling.
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled Thursday that common-law couples do not have the same rights as married couples when it comes to splitting up their property after a break up or divorce.
If a marriage ends in divorce, the assets are generally divided up evenly among the spouses.
According to the ruling, this will not be the case with the common-law spouses. They can only sue for those shared assets which they contributed to

Safe sex?
The free love generation is firmly in charge, and now we are reaping the results of the laissez-faire, non judgemental social policies they sowed.
1. Twenty-five per cent of teens who are sexually active live with an STD today. Between 12 and 19, half become sexually active.
2. Many will be carrying two or three STDs
3. Almost 50% of American black teens have genital herpes.
4. Herpes has skyrocketed 500% in the past 20 years. One in five North Americans carries herpes.
5. One in 10 teenage girls has chlamydia (an STD that can cause sterility) and half of all new chlamydia cases are diagnosed in girls 15- to 19-years old.
Whereas Miss America is scorned for preaching abstinence and being a virgin.
For evidence of that division, one need only look at the recent triumph of Erika Harold, 22, the new whip-smart, multiracial, Miss America, who announced after her crowning that she was a virgin and will use her year-long reign to encourage American teenagers to swear off sex until they’re married. First thing that happened, pageant officials ordered her not to talk publicly about sexual abstinence. Then the cultural left fell about foaming at the mouth, calling her statement “a terrible shock,” and people like pro-choice and safe-sex advocate Susan Wilson of Rutgers said, “I think the judges should take away her crown for lying.”

Toddler Nightmare
Thank goodness this guy is old - hopefully his socialist ideas will go with him too. Mr. Kent wants toddlers - almost babies - to go to school even earlier to become further indoctrinated with socialist policies.
This mainly to do an end run around a national day care program - part of the socialist agenda to get kids away from their parents and into the groupthink that is Liberal Canada.
There are still a few of us who still think that kids should be raised by their parents for as long as possible - and when they’re home, they should be playing, not studying.
It is not easy being a child in this society. A child’s only job should be to play, and if common sense is not argument enough, then surely there are enough academic journals around to suggest that play—the opportunity to experiment, to learn from mistake—is at the heart of creativity and, equally so, at the core of happiness.
Sometimes I think people are not having kids because the government makes it sound like only they can/should raise them - leaving parents completely without control or influence.

A good start
The GOC has announced that more people are taking advantage of the family leave allowance of 1 year. As much as I dislike the idea of kids only being raised by their mothers up to the age of 1, it’s still better than 6 months or 0 months.
About 216,000 Canadians took advantage of parental benefits in 2001, compared with almost 174,000 — an increase of 24.3 per cent. Maternity-benefit claims increased by 27,420 to 198,420 in 2001 from 170,950 in 2000, a rise of 16.1 per cent.
If only we had a fairer tax system, where single income families had the same advantages of dual income families. Focus On the Family has an article outlining this position:
Under the current tax system, families choosing to have a parent stay at home with their children face a higher tax burden than two-income families earning the same money. While it is true that a higher spousal deduction and flatter tax rate would lessen the imbalance, they do not entirely eliminate the problem or the need for a more equitable tax system.

Out of Ecstasy
From the “just in case you needed another reason not to do drugs” dept, comes this story:
The Ecstasy being consumed by young people at clubs, raves and schools is contaminated with many other chemicals, many of them more dangerous than pure Ecstasy, according to a study of large quantities of the drug confiscated in British Columbia.
An analysis of the pills, liquid and crystals conducted by the RCMP forensic lab and the University of British Columbia shows drugs purported to be pure Ecstasy can contain up to nine different chemicals. “We have never seen so many combinations,” RCMP Corporal Scott Rintoul said.
And as if we weren’t feeling inferior enough as global weaklings:
“The quality of club drugs in Canada is awful.”
Oh Canada.

Good-bye Beaver
Today’s census release has shown what most already know: the traditional nuclear family is either in Splitzville or Gonesville. This article in the Star tells that the traditional family of a married couple with a couple of kids is rapidly disappearing.
In fact, the latest census data released today suggests the Canadian family is changing quite emphatically.
Households consisting of four or more people — typically mom, dad and their two kids — accounted for only a quarter of all Canadian households in 2001. Two decades earlier, they accounted for a third.
At the same time, the number of households is rising — to almost 11.6 million, a 6.9 per cent increase from 1996. The increase in smaller households was the biggest single contributor to the growth.
RealWomen of Canada, who support laws that promote the traditional family, argue that it’s the government’s oppresive tax laws that make it harder for mother to stay at home and raise the kids:
“I think these statistics indicate that there are serious pressures on Canadians and on families that maybe should be addressed,” said Watts.
Pressures such as high taxation that “almost forces the family” to have two working members rather than one working and one staying at home to care for the family, she said.
The pressures sometimes created by two working parents also destroy families, children and marriages, said Watts.
Ironically, it’s recent immigrants that seem to stay in traditional families, with a focus on their kids. It’s the home grown Canadians that seem to focus on their own pleasure, before sacrificing themselves for their kids (if they have them at all).
Woe is the society that puts itself before the well being of children...and creating a better future generation.
