Detroit Decays
Imagine a building this big sitting empty for 10 years in Toronto. Detroit is one of the saddest cities in one of the saddest states of America. Let’s hope they can turn it around there. How I do not know.
Who knew there was a whole website devoted to this and more buildings.

Making sense
It’s this kind of thinking that makes me happy to vote for Sen. McCain.
The presumed Republican nominee on Monday proposed a $300 million government prize to whoever can develop an automobile battery that far surpasses existing technology. The bounty would equate to $1 for every man, woman and child in the country, “a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency,” McCain said at Fresno State University.
We need more ideas like this to spur innovation. It’s about time!

Isn’t working in a meat packing plant punishment enough?
I love J-Walk’s comment.
Isn’t working in a meat packing plant punishment enough?
Personally, I think the country is better off keeping those who defy the odds and get into the country, and take a sh*t job. They’ve obviously got balls and sticking power.

Newt-ered
Too bad about this...no one speaks as well as Newt, or seems to know as much.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday he could have been a contender, but has no regrets about skipping the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

Subsidized fat
You can blame government policy for making America fat.

Ban April
Thanks to Hitler, I think it’s time to ban the month of April, or at least the days in between his birth and death (Apr 20-30).
Students and faculty at Virginia Tech University were in shock Monday after a gunman shot and killed at least 31 people and injured 28 during the most deadly shooting spree in U.S. history.

Straight talking Senator
It’s about time we hear a politician who won’t cave to the sky-is-falling global warming alarmists. Harper take note.

Imagine inviting Hitler
At least one prominent politician is standing against the insane Iranian president’s visit to Harvard.
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is best known for his strong domestic conservatism. Today, he took a tough stand on a crucial foreign policy issue.

Baghdad?
I’ve often read that D.C. is more dangerous than Iraq.

Even the poor people are fat
A great article on what’s so great about America. Happy Birthday, America.
But it had the opposite effect. Ordinary people across the Soviet Union saw that the poorest Americans had television sets and cars. They arrived at the same conclusion that I witnessed in a friend of mine from Bombay who has been trying unsuccessfully to move to the United States for nearly a decade. I asked him, “Why are you so eager to come to America?” He replied, “Because I really want to live in a country where the poor people are fat.”

Gingrich May Run in 2008
If he does run, I’ll vote for him.
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) expects to run for president in 2008 if the contest for the Republican nomination still seems wide open late next year, he said yesterday.
He certainly is one of the smartest guys I’ve listened to.

Bush will rally
Hard to find too many articles like this saying good things about GWB.
One hears not an encouraging word about US President George W Bush these days, even from Republican loyalists. Yet I believe that Bush will stage the strongest political comeback of any US politician since Abraham Lincoln won re-election in 1864 in the midst of the American Civil War.

This story makes you wonder what on earth is happening in American inner cities.

The coming explosion
Fred has some thoughts on the upcoming demograpgic powderkeg, that is the American underclass.
As we look forward to a massive slewing away from the dominance of European whites in America, what may we expect? What will these huge minority populations do? It is instructive to look at what they have done so far.
I’m not sure if Canada can learn any lessons, but it is instructional.

1 billion Americans
Soloman, citing Lincoln, on the case for bigger immigration.
And not only so, but the increase of our population may be expected to continue for a long time after that period, as rapidly as before; because our territory will not have become full. . . . Our abundant room – our broad national homestead – is our ample resource

Life in border towns has always presented challenges for residents.

Who’s doing the work?
As the US struggles to figure out how to kick out millions of illegals, there’s this.
As the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina receded in September, roads filled with residents leaving the city, their cars, SUVs and moving vans jammed with what they had salvaged of their lives.
But another mass movement was taking place on the other sides of the highways.
It’s interesting that the group most displaced by the latinos is the blacks.

No time for peacemakers
Coren’s as fed up as I am with the peace activists we saved in Iraq.
Some of us, fools that we are, would never have the time to travel to Iraq and make political statements. We’re too busy paying the rent, raising our children, caring for aging parents and other such banal and apparently unnecessary tasks.
How long you suppose until they’re right back in the soup?

Paradise and a job
It’s easy for the mind to wander towards greener pastures with the dreary cold weather we’ve been having. Apparently there are jobs too in the land of the sun tan.
HONOLULU (AP)—Hawaii could almost change its state motto to “Help Wanted.”
Only problem is, I don’t think you can get Stern’s satellite show out there.

Live Free Or Else!
I’ve always liked the state motto of New Hampshire. Here’s an entry on what’s up with it today.
Liberals hate “Live Free Or Die.” They hated it in the late 60s and early 70s, when I lived in New Hampshire, and they hate it still. The only difference is that liberals have grown more powerful in the state as southern New Hampshire increasingly consists of Boston bedroom communities.

Kid Iraq
Gotta like a kid with the stones to head over to a war zone.
“I don’t think I will ever leave him in the house alone again,” she said. “He showed a lack of judgment.”
Better sign him up for the Marines.

Stand up and get respect
Sometimes it pays to stand up to the US - ie. get some balls. It seems to have got Hatch’s attention.
Alberta’s ability to make oilsands production economically viable is a “great success story,” said Mr. Hatch, who at one point joked that “we in this country don’t want to be on Canada’s shit list, ever.”
Have to give credit to Martin, for once.
